Eclipsed is a true story that is preposterous and barely believable.
A story about how a kid dances his way from London’s West End all the way to Hollywood, overtaking his ‘celebrity’ dad on his way. I am this dad. Dominic Holland. A pro stand-up comic who has written many screenplays and taken aim at Hollywood himself. And with some success. Scripts sold but without ever hearing the seductive word, action. Years of hurt then? Maybe, until such woe suddenly became fertile and comic ground for a story comparing father and son.
Eclipsed ran as a blog from March 2011 until Dec 2012, concluding when THE IMPOSSIBLE premiered in LA and is about to be released worldwide. It is already Spain’s most successful theatrical film ever. The blog covered the real time lives of father and son and is available in full – all 119 posts or takes at dominicholland.co.uk – ‘eclipsed.’
I have no complaints. I am happily married with four healthy children. I make my living entirely by making people laugh and I have enjoyed considerable success. But careers plateau and from the heights of the Royal Variety Performance, I find myself doing one man shows in village halls.
Tom meanwhile flies back and forth to LA every month – and in a seat that becomes a bed! Drew Barrymore calls his ‘people’ and asks to meet him and Dustin Hoffman high fives him in an LA bar and calls him Tom.
The lives of Dom and Tom could not be more divergent – and luckily I am bursting with pride for my son – and the comic story it provides is an unexpected upside for an unsuspecting dad – who is still treading the boards and typing away and hoping. Always hoping…
